As far as the transformer you can look for an original and replace the whole transformer. You won't likely need to replace any caps in this set. Great Buy for $40! I have one of these and they are a great 1920's set. I find I enjoy fooling around with them better than most of my later vintage sets. Once you get into the 1920's battery sets, I think you might get hooked.
If I'm correct, somewhere around 2000 ohms is good but they seem to be very forgiving. I play the set with a horn, but for testing they all seemed to work fine. I have 3 horns, 2 wooden (Newcombe-Hawley and a Peerless), and two metal (AK model E and Radiola 100). I believe any horn speaker, a lot of the wooden box style speakers and some of the metal speakers like the AK model E will work.
Of course I marked everything so I minimize the chance of a mis-connection. Takes about 30 seconds to hook it all up and there's no chance of battery drain. The wires coming out of the radio have insulated alligator clips on the end. The eyelets attached to the terminal strip going out to the radio I left empty. I ran the wires to a terminal strip with eyelets on both sides. 10 9v batteries for 90v and 45v (tap off midway thru the string of 9volts) and 3 AA's were what I needed for both sets. I bought a rechargeable 6v battery capable of handling 4 amps (I believe) at a local Rural King that is used in electronic game calls.
